When Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

good things come to those who wait

I recently talked about wanting to find the Gayle to my Oprah in my article, “On Knowing Who Your Friends Are“. Who doesn’t want to know the secret to why they get along so well after knowing each other for so long? Oprah said one thing in an interview with Gayle that stood out to me the most. She said that after she was fired as an anchor on the 6 o’clock news, she was devasted. She goes on to say, “But God closes a door and then opens a window. If I hadn’t been removed from the news, the whole talk show thing would have never happened”. It’s amazing how our futures can be altered! Truly, it seems that good things come to those who wait.

One thing that has been hard for me, and what I can assume for many post-grads, is this transitional period between college and the real world. It can be incredibly hard to go through this when life doesn’t go exactly to plan. It’s like your entire safety net has been taken from you and you’re left to defend yourself. I can only imagine what being fired from a job must feel like. In my life, my mom has always echoed the same sentiment that good things come to those who wait. So, I always keep that in the back of my mind whenever I’m going through rough times. However, it can still be hard sometimes to stay positive in these situations.

It’s hard to accept when things don’t work out because you don’t really see the big picture at first. It’s almost like the world is crashing down. You think your life is over and you really don’t know how you will bounce back in that moment. I know I felt that way because I worked so hard during school to prepare myself for life after college. I think it’s worth noting that we just don’t know what’s going to happen to us. Life is so undeniably unpredictable that I’m not sure any amount of preparation would help.

“Good things come to those who wait” can be applied to any situation. I know I’ve heard stories of a few bloggers who were laid off or fired from their jobs. They now have a blog where they are getting massive traffic and are able to do it full-time. These kinds of stories are so inspiring to hear, especially if your motivation is down. I often think that when faced with something that’s hard to swallow, you can feel like you’re a failure or that you’ve done something wrong to deserve it. This is entirely not true at all.

When I look at Oprah and Gayle, the basis for my inspiration for writing lately, I think if only I could be so lucky to find someone who I connect with like that. In an interview when talking about the friendships she says, “Something about this relationship feels otherworldly to me, like it was designed by a power and a hand greater than my own”. How beautiful is it to feel like you’ve found a friend like that? Friendships and relationships are funny like that. You can find amazing people come in and out of your life, but you still have to wait for it. So, don’t feel bad if you haven’t found that special connection with someone because good things come. You just have to wait.

Looking at these two scenarios, post-grad transition struggles and finding that special connection, there is a single tie that brings them together. I think that when someone feels like they’ve failed or when a relationship isn’t quite what you expected it to be, we think that’s the end. But perhaps we should think of it as the beginning. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, of a new book, of a new series. It’s easy to tell someone to not be scared. Believe me when I say that I’m still terrified about my future too. However, my one good piece of advice based on my experiences and from my research, is that good things come to those who wait.

Question of the day: Do you think good things come to people who wait? How have you experienced this?

  1. I completely get what you mean about the transitional period after college – it’s like you’ve been told to follow this path for your whole life and then suddenly the path runs out. But things happen for a reason and I like to believe that you end up where you’re meant to be when you’re meant to be.
    Great post!

  2. I think good things DO come to those who wait and are patient for them but I also think they come to those who work hard for things as well. Not everything falls into people’s laps. I can’t relate to the graduation/work thing as I didn’t go to uni (regrettably) but my life also took a hugely unexpected turn when I developed anxiety and realised I couldn’t leave the house or do anything I used to do. I have a blog and an online business I built from scratch and work for myself now but I didn’t wait for that, I went and did it because I knew I had to. It think each individual person has different circumstances for sure but patience is a virtue – things don’t happen overnight xxx
